"That’s what running does to lives. It’s not just exercise. It’s not just achievement. It’s a daily discipline that has nothing to do with speed, weight, social status, sexual orientation, political affiliation, where you live, what car you drive, or whether anyone anywhere loves you. It’s about the slow and painful process of being the best you can be. That’s why the first step out the door is always so hard. That’s when we choose between settling for average and being a superhero version of ourselves."

This is what color I wore when I RAN A HALF-MARATHON.
Now that I’m back from TX & caught up on work, I’ll post more on the race later tonight. Hint: it was AWESOME.

I cannot stop running while this song is playing, I don’t even care that it name-checks Kristin Cavallari (maybe I love it?).

Weekly Recap: The “UGH STUPID INTERNET” edition

Hey there adventurers:

So yesterday I wrote up this great post about how proud and inspired I am by all of the NYC Marathoners (you folks are seriously incredible and it was so fun getting to watch you tackle that thing) and about how nervous/excited/eager I am about my own big race next weekend (OMG 5 DAYS), but the internet ate it and I, like a silly person, did not save it beforehand. So now you are left with a much abridged, bullet-point version of a recap, because this week is crazy busy & I don’t have the brain power to rewrite. Apologies for my shortcuts and onwards, towards a recap:

  • CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE MARATHONERS! You guys are amazing and inspiring and beautiful and so, so totally awesome. There are not enough words for your incredible accomplishment.
  • OMG MY RACE IS IN 5 DAYS. HOLY HOLY HOLY GOODNESS.
  • I’ll be in Texas in 3 days!
  • This week was good, with a nice 7.25 run on sunday (10:08 pace), some good stretching and a short 4.5 mile run on Tuesday.
  • This whole adventure and training has been so big and taken up so much of my thought-space, I can’t believe it’s almost over, but also I’m kind of looking forward to the end and finding my next challenge.

That’s it from me, recap-wise. I hope your last weeks went well and that you’re having an adventurous time this week!

many thanks.

I read an article in the Times a few months ago about two friends, a couple of sorts, who end each meal together by listing things they’re grateful for that day. I love the formality of this, and the simple act of thinking through our blessings, other than the more obvious, like our friends and family and food and shelter. It’s an exercise in finding silver linings and unnoticed blessings, and on stressful days or in moments of exhaustion and frustration, I’ve taken to keeping a list of things I’m grateful for that particular day: the things that keep me going.

Between my applications, the stress/excitement of my upcoming race, normal work crazy, and a slew of other happenings, I feel like I’ve been this irritable mess, taking everything for granted. I wanted to take a moment and give some space to the things I’m grateful for:

  • The physical ability to run, to release, to get out of my head and onto the pavement, however often I’m able.
  • The incredible support that I’ve had from my roommates and my family in taking on this race and the other challenges facing me this fall.
  • That I have an amazing, flexible job that allows me to come in early or leave late, to make sure I get my training done and still have a life.
  • The totally unreal things I get to do during my play time!

There are dozens more, but this is what’s been resonating with me today. Thanks for sharing the moment with me, dearests.

P.S. - the card image is from Rifle Paper Co. who have just the prettiest, cutest little things.

Training Week 10 Recap

Well, folks, today was my LAST LONG RUN before the half. 12 full miles. It was a slow run, hindered a bit by cold and the god! damn! williamsburg! bridge!, but I made it through and now I start tapering.

This week went pretty well, but the Oct-snow-ber storm threw off my plans a little. I was planning to run on Saturday, but when I woke up it looked like this:

So… yeah. nope to running. Instead, I hung out with the boy and did this:

I’m pebbles. He’s an astronaut. Saturday night: adorable. Sunday morning/afternoon: exhausted. I didn’t start my run until 5pm, meaning it was SO COLD and SO DARK when I finally finished. Note to self: plan better. Overall, a great end to a good week.

Here’s the recap:

Monday - stretch & strength

Tuesday - 3.13 miles / 10:00min pace

Wednesday - rest

Thursday - 3.5 miles / 9:25min pace (!!!!!!!)

Friday - rest

Saturday - snow & party

Sunday - 12 miles / 11:14 pace

We’re officially 11 DAYS away from Texas and 14 DAYS away from my half-marathon. I’m freaking out a little bit and starting to get scared, but I’m also really excited for race day. 25ish miles left to run! Let’s do this!
